The Ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990, Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, passed away on October 7, 1990 at the age of 78. Rashid was an instrumental part of Dubai's development and growth throughout his 32-year reign. He was a respected leader and made many significant and lasting contributions, both politically and economically. Born on November 15, 1911, Rashid was a member of the Al Maktoum dynasty, the traditional ruling family of the United Arab Emirates. In 1958, Rashid was selected to be the Ruler of Dubai – a position he held for over three decades. He initiated modernisation in Dubai, both through infrastructure projects, such as the construction of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ras Al Khaimah highway, and educational and social reforms, such as establishing the University of Dubai and unemployment benefits. Under the rule of Rashid, Dubai experienced significant development, resulting in it becoming a well-known trade centre. He was responsible for enacting laws that helped Dubai to become a major provider of oil in the region, by allowing foreign capital and investors into the country. Rashid will be remembered for his efforts in laying the foundations for modern Dubai and leading it towards financial prosperity. He will be dearly missed by the people of Dubai.
