Randy Shughart, a highly decorated US Army Sergeant and one of the most distinguished heroes of the 20th century, passed away on October 3, 1993 at the age of 35. The Green Beret was born on November 27, 1958 in Newmanstown, Pennsylvania and graduated from the US Army Special Forces Qualification Course in 1986. His first assignment was to the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and during his tour, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Expert Infantry Badge. In 1993 Shughart was deployed to Somalia, where he distinguished himself in actions that lead to him being posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. During an attempted rescue of a fellow serviceman while under heavy enemy fire, Randy gave his life to protect his comrade. His memory will live forever through the various decorations and awards he earned during his lifetime, including the Medal of Honor, two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantry badge. Randy's death touched the hearts of many, and he will forever be remembered as a hero.
