Ramana Maharshi, one of India’s most renowned spiritual teachers, passed away on April 14th, 1950 at the age of 70. He was born to a farming family in Tiruchuli in South India in 1879. He is best known for his teachings on Advaita Vedanta, a branch of Hinduism, which was rooted in the realization of self-inquiry. Ramana was a student of Sanskrit literature and was passionate about Ramayana, the Hindu epic. In 1896, at the age of 17, his spiritual awakening occurred while facing death. He left his family soon after and traveled to the holy mountain of Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, south India, where he spent the remainder of his life in meditative contemplation. In 1922, he relocated to a cave on the hill top, where he spent his remaining years in profound stillness, engaging in discourse with seekers from all walks of life, who came to him seeking enlightenment. Ramana’s teachings went on to influence a global audience that included humanist and social thinkers such as Aldous Huxley, Letters Morrison and Paul Brunton. His philosophy was fundamentally about the nature of consciousness and reality, emphasizing non-dualism, and the idea that we are all one with the divine. He is remembered for his profound insights and unshakable presence, his ability to gracefully draw spiritual teachings from everyday experiences, and his teachings that have profoundly shaped and transformed countless lives. He breathed his last in his beloved Arunachala, leaving behind a legacy and teachings that will be remembered for generations to come.
