Rabindranath Tagore, a renowned Bengali poet, novelist, visual artist, educator, and humanist, passed away on August 7th 1941 at the age of 80. He is most renowned for his Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his book of poems Gitanjali, as well as the national anthem of India “Jana Gana Mana” and the national anthem of Bangladesh “Amar Sonar Bangla”, which he wrote in 1911. Tagore is widely celebrated in India and Bangladesh for his literary abilities and stands as an icon in both countries. Tagore was born in Calcutta, India on May 7th 1861. He was the youngest child of fourteen children born to Debendranath Tagore and Srimati Sarada Devi. His vision of education was born from “Visva-Bharati University” established in Shantiniketan that focused on a holistic approach to pedagogy. His artwork had a great influence on the budding nationalist movement of India. Tagore passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones. He will be remembered fondly as one of India and Bangladesh’s greatest poets and writers.
