It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved music composer and singer Rahul Dev Burman on January 4, 1994. Rahul was born in Calcutta on June 27, 1939. He had an extreme fascination with music, and taught himself to play piano and harmonium from a young age. His talent was recognized early on, and he founded a fully equipped recording studio in Calcutta by his late teens. Moving from his humble beginnings, Rahul quickly made a name for himself in the music industry and was bestowed with numerous awards. He composed more than 300 film soundtracks and is best remembered for his signature sound that combined unusual instrumentation, folk music, jazz elements, innovative beats and trance-like modulations. As a highly acclaimed composer, singer and producer, Rahul is beloved by all who knew him. He left an indelible mark on the music world, and his unique style of music continues to be appreciated by generations. He will always be remembered for his amazing contributions to the Indian film industry. May his soul rest in peace.
