Today we mark the passing of HRH Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who died on 10 June 1974 in Australia at the age of 74. He was the third son of George V and Queen Mary and the younger brother of King George VI and Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood. Prince Henry was born in England on 31 March 1900, and was an active participant in several military regiments before his service in World War I. He served with the Grenadier Guards and was conferred with the Order of the British Empire. Prince Henry later served as the Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1947, and in his capacity was beloved by Australians for his engagements and kindness. For his work there he was granted the Australian Order of Merit. Following his works as Governor-General, Prince Henry continued to serve the British Empire in a variety of roles such as High Commissioner for South Africa and represent the United Kingdom at the United Nations. His life was surrounded by service to the British Empire and his death marks the conclusion of a distinguished career. Prince Henry died at his residence outside of Sydney surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, HRH Alice, Duchess of Gloucester and their 3 children.
