Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017, passed away on August 31, 2020 at the age of 84. Born in Mukutmonipur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, Pranab Muherjee grew up to be one of India's most respected politicians. He graduated in law from University of Calcutta in 1963, and entered politics in 1969 as a Congress Party member of Parliament. Mukherjee held several key positions throughout his 50-year tenure, including Finance Minister (2009 - 2012) and Foreign Minister (1995 - 1996). His statesmanship and sharp acumen earned him the dedication, respect, and appreciation of people from all walks of life, and he was seen as a leader who could bridge partisan divides. His career was marked by numerous acclaimed achievements, including the implementation of the historic Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017. While his political career will serve as an inspiration for generations to come, Mukherjee is fondly remembered by his friends and family as a humble, witty, and compassionate man. Above all, he believed deeply in the power of Indian democracy. He is survived by his wife, his son, and his daughter, and will surely be remembered for years to come.
