On Thursday, August 20, 1914, Pope Pius X passed away in Rome, at the age of 21 years old. Born Giuseppe Sarto, he ascended to the papacy in 1903 and became a beloved and dedicated leader to the Catholic Church. An Italian native, Pius X was committed to advocating for the youth of his nation, prioritizing evangelism, and improving the spiritual climate of the Church through modernizing teachings and bringing its members closer to God. He was also honored as the patron saint of children. His revolutionary reforms reshaped Catholic education and spurred the engagement of the laity in the Church. He sought to rejuvenate the papacy and served as a champion of the Church’s freedom from temporal dominion. Pius X will be fondly remembered for his unwavering devotion to faith, belief in peace and justice, and profound love for God. Pope Pius X was a pioneering figure of the early 20th century and his mark on the Church will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed by his devoted followers and by those across the globe whose lives were forever changed by his leadership and guidance.
