Polly Bergen, a renowned stage, television, and film actress and singer, died on September 20, 2014. She was 84. Bergen’s career spanned nearly seven decades and included many award-winning performances. She won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Single Performance in a Drama or Comedy Series for her portrayal of Helen Morgan in the Playhouse 90 adaptation of the brief, volatile life of the 1920s torch singer. Bergen also earned Tony Award and Golden Globe nominations for her role as processor of Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of “Chicago”. She was a popular television personality in the 1950s, co-hosting the Today Show, as well as featured in roles in over 60 films, including Cape Fear, Move Over Darling, and Sweet Bird of Youth. Bergen was born Nellie Paulina Burgin in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 14, 1930. She was the daughter of Clara Burgin, a woman of aristocratic Southern descent, and a World War I veteran father, William Huggin. Bergen attended the University of Miami, and after graduation started her entertainment career singing at the Kitty Carlisle Show in New York. She went on to perform as the lead singer in Freddy Martin’s Orchestra and was heard over the radio throughout the U.S. During her extensive career, Bergen was also an accomplished singer, an acclaimed perfumer, and a best-selling author. Bergen was also known for her charitable work with the National Osteoporosis Foundation and with The Polly Bergen Foundation for Women, founded in 2002. Bergen was twice married and is survived by her daughter and grandchild. She will be remembered and beloved for her grace, beauty, and talent.
