It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of iconic French fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who passed away on December 29, 2020 at the age of 98. Cardin had a passion for fashion from a very young age, studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then working with the designer Elsa Schiaparelli. In 1945 he opened his own fashion house, Pierre Cardin Paris. Cardin created daringly avant-garde designs, blending traditional couture craftsmanship with modern materials and colours. He used new fabrics and technologies to redefine everyday fashion and revolutionised couture, breaking with the rigidly structured post-war look. Cardin was also known for his innovative menswear, launching the mannequin look, featuring perfectly-fitted suits and shirts. During his decades-spanning career, Cardin was awarded multiple accolades, including the Légion d’Honneur, the Grand Prix National de la Mode, and the Medal of the City of Paris. Cardin’s legacy will live on through the hundreds of fashion creations that he left behind, and he will be remembered for his strong determination and creativity.
