On June 30th, 1995, Phyllis Hyman, a legendary R&B/Soul singer and song writer, passed away peacefully at the age of 45. One of nine children born to Alice and Samuel Hyman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 6th, 1949, Phyllis first began singing in her father's church. She later moved to New York City to pursue her passion, joining the band New Direction in 1975. Also during that time she appeared on television and stage as an actress. Known for her distinctive vocal style, she released four solo albums, starting with Phyllis Hyman in 1977. She also appeared on TV shows, Broadway musicals, and films. Her other albums, including Can't We Fall in Love Again, Living All Alone, and Prime of My Life, saw her achieving award-winning success and critical acclaim. Her determined efforts to "showcase the complexity of urban love" also made her one of the most powerful and influential female singers of her time. Phyllis Hyman saw her life and career tragically cut short due to her personal struggles with depression. She will be remembered as a consummate entertainer whose remarkable talents and passion for music will never be forgotten.
