Phil Ochs, a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, died on April 9th, 1976 at the age of 35. He was born in El Paso, Texas on December 19th, 1940 to Jacob and Gertrude Ochs. Throughout his career, he wrote a variety of political protest songs, collaborating with the likes of Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. Ochs began recording as a part of the folk movement in the early 1960s while attending Ohio State University, where he earned a degree in Journalism in 1962. His songs often encapsulated the spirit of the civil rights movement, and his hits such as “Power and the Glory”, “I Ain't Marchin' Anymore”, and “Love Me, I'm a Liberal” became anthems for the left-wing. After a challenging battle with depression, Ochs died by suicide in 1976. He is remembered for his bravery, creativity, and for the power of his words. He will be deeply missed by his friends, fans, and family.
