Paula Hitler passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 1960 at the age of 64. Born Alois Hitler's daughter in 1896 in Austria, she went on to live an interesting life full of surprises. Although Paula began her life in an affluent family, her hard times began when her father lost his post as a government customs official and the family moved to different towns to make ends meet. This was a difficult and stressful time for her father, and Paula had to watch her father become an increasingly loud and erratic figure. But Paula managed to move away from her chaotic family life in her late teens. In 1916, at the age of 20, she moved out of her parents' home and began working as a housekeeper in Vienna. Despite her tumultuous upbringing, she showed strength and resilience, securing lucrative work and becoming financially independent. In 1921, she married Leopold Frankenberger and settled near her half-brother Alois Hitler, Jr. Her family, however, disapproved of her marrying a man of Jewish descent; they never allowed Adolf Hitler to forget that part of his lineage. Following the Second World War, Paula moved to Berchtesgaden to be closer to her half-brother. It was here that she remained for the short remainder of her days. Despite her family’s dark past, she was never labeled a Nazi and did not actively associate with the fascist movement. Although her heritage was often discussed, she was never labeled as a Nazi supporter due to her own decisions regarding her political beliefs. Paula Hitler left behind a rather interesting life, but passed away peacefully in her home in Berchtesgaden at the age of 64. She will be fondly remembered by those who knew her and by those who are interested in her unique story.
