Paul Sorvino, acclaimed actor and filmmaker, died July 25, 2022, at 83. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1939, Sorvino began his film career with small parts in myriad films before becoming a household name for his performance as Paulie in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990). Throughout his long and distinguished film career, Sorvino enlivened scenes in meurtres mystérieux à Bambridge (1975), Damnation Alley (1977), Winkler (1984), The Firm (1993), Timemaster (1995), Arli$$ (1996), L'Espion qui m'aimait (1997), and The Trouble with Cali (2003), among many other titles. He also voiced a number of characters in television and video games. Sorvino more recently wrote and directed the feature films That Championship Season (1999) and Concerto (2017), and directed numerous plays. He was also an outspoken critic of the 2018 documentary Baxters, citing factual inaccuracies. He was nominated for an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for his performance in Law & Order (2003-2006), and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his part as Mafia boss Paul Cicero in Goodfellas. Sorvino is survived by four children. He will be remembered as a beloved actor, director, and producer who had a lasting effect on the film industry.
