Pancho Villa (1878- 1923), a revolutionary leader, died on July 20, 1923 in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico at age 45. Born Doroteo Arango on June 5, 1878 in San Juan del Rio, Durango, Mexico, Pancho Villa was an herder who began his rebellion against the Mexican government in 1910. He fought in the Mexican Revolution on the side of Francisco Madero and against the ten-year regime of Porfirio Diaz. Beginning in 1913, Villa took over cities and towns, often leading a band of men on horseback now referred to as “Division del Norte". His last major battle was in January 1923 when he led his men in a raid on Bachimba. He will be remembered as a fearless leader and patriot who fought against atrocity and for freedom. His legacy lives on in the many monuments to him all throughout Mexico.
