Pablo Picasso, one of the world's most influential and renowned artists, passed away on April 8th, 1973 after 91 years of life. Picasso made an immeasurable impact on the world of art, both as a painter and sculptor. Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25th, 1881. In 1895, at the age of 13, he began studying art at his mother's encouragement. By 1900, he had moved to Barcelona and then to Paris two years later. During this time, Picasso developed the modern art movement known as 'Cubism', which revolutionized the art landscape. He was also an innovator in Surrealism and Expressionism. Picasso’s paintings and sculptures quickly gained worldwide acclaim. He rose to fame for his iconic works such as 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', 'Guernica', 'The Weeping Woman' and an array of ceramic pieces. Picasso felt poignantly as a political artist and his work was a reflection of the upheaval in the 20th century. In addition to his career as an artist, Picasso was also a poet, playwright and ceramicist. He was awarded the International Peace Prize in 1952 by the Ludwig Mond Foundation in London. In 1961, he entered a state of semi-retirement and his later works focused on nature and animals. Picasso left behind an extraordinary legacy of art and will be remembered as one of the most influential artists of all time.
