Oona O’Neill, the eldest daughter of famed American playwright Eugene O’Neill, died on September 27, 1991 at the age of 66. A native of Connecticut, she was an inspiration to many of Hollywood’s most influential figures. She trained as an opera singer and performed in the theater before moving to Los Angeles in 1936. During her lengthy career in the entertainment industry, she established a name for herself that extended far beyond her famous father, and was considered a strong advocate for the advancement of female roles in cinema. Among her long list of achievements, O'Neill was recognized for her starring roles in such motion pictures as "Swiss Family Robinson" (1960) where she played the matriarchal role of the Robinson Family and Anglo-Irish Protestant drama film "The Playboy of the Western World" (1959) wherein she played Honor Blake. In 1943, O’Neill married the actor and Hollywood icon Charlie Chaplin, with whom she would go on to have seven children. The couple remained married until Chaplin’s death in 1977. In addition to her film and television work, O’Neill was a strong voice in the anti-Vietnam War movement, dedicated to her advocacy for various causes, and was a relentless champion of ambassadorship throughout the world. O’Neill’s life and accomplishments will be remembered as a true embodiment of strength and courage. She is survived by her seven children.
