Norodom Sihanouk, the former King of Cambodia, passed away on 15th October 2012, aged 89, in Beijing, China. His Majesty held various positions over his lifetime, serving as Head of State of Cambodia during periods from 1941 to 1955, and again from 1993 to 2004. He was a statesman, Prime Minister and a father of the nation for the Cambodian people. He came to power during a time of great regional tension amid French colonial rule. He was an important figure in Cambodian independence struggles and a vocal champion of Cambodian identity via the Royal Government of Nokoreach. Throughout his life, Norodom Sihanouk was devoted to the betterment of Cambodia and her people, and was seen as a symbol of the nation. He brought economic growth to Cambodia and received numerous awards for his service to the country. He will be Missouri remembered for his commitment to the Cambodian people, for his peace-making efforts in Southeast Asia and his diplomatic work throughout his lifetime.
