On December 5th, 2023, Norman Lear passed away in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 101.
Lear was a renowned television writer, producer, and director who became famous in the 1970s for producing multiple groundbreaking sitcoms that tackled difficult social and political topics. Some of his most well-known works include All in the Family, Sanford and Son, and Good Times.
In addition to his career in television, Lear actively worked and advocated for liberal causes. This included work for the NAACP, People for the American Way, and the Environmental Media Association.
Lear received numerous honors and awards for his work, including 11 primetime Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, the first George Foster Peabody Lifetime Achievement Award ever presented, Kennedy Center honors, and a National Medal of Arts.
He is survived by his second wife, Lyn Davis Lear, four of his children from his first marriage, Maggie, Ellen, Kate, and Benjamin, and a stepdaughter, Madeline.
Lear was a television pioneer whose influence can still be felt in today's programming. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, trail-blazing shows, and passion for justice.
