Nora Ephron, a beloved screenwriter, director, and author, died on June 26, 2012, at the age of 71. Ephron was born in New York City to a family of playwrights, where she grew up writing short stories that were published in Seventeen magazine while she was still in high school. Her career as a screenwriter spanned over four decades, and included the romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You’ve Got Mail (1998). In addition to her writing credits, she also wrote, directed, and produced the films This Is My Life (1992) and Julie & Julia (2009). Ephron was also well known for her books, which included Heartburn (1983), a novel loosely based on her own marriage and its dissolution, and I Feel Bad About My Neck (2006). She also wrote the essay collection I Remember Nothing (2010). Ephron was never one to shy away from controversy and was known for her sharp wit. Her candid nature and intelligent humor will be greatly missed.

Death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life’s change agent, it clears out the old to make way for the new. Steve Jobs
