Known in popular culture as the first person to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong peacefully passed away on August 25th, 2012 at the age of 82. Born Neil Alden Armstrong on August 5th, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, he was the son of Viola Louise and Stephen Koenig Armstrong. He earned a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and a Masters in aerospace engineering from University of Southern California. In September of 1962 Armstrong was chosen to join the astronaut corps, and a few years later he was made the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. On July 20th, 1969 he became the first person to set foot on the moon, utters the now iconic phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." His unprecedented achievement in space exploration made him an American icon and further earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Richard Nixon, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world. Armstrong retired from NASA in 1971, after which he served as professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering. He retired from his teaching position five years later. Armstrong took part in numerous public service events throughout his life, and devoted much of his time to serving as a spokesperson for many space related causes. Neil Armstrong is remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and leader in space exploration. He will be missed by countless friends and family members around the world.
