Nathuram Godse, born in May 1910, died on November 15th, 1949. A native of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, he lived in the cities of Baramati and Pune. He was known for his involvement in the assassination of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi, the spiritual leader of the nonviolence movement in India during the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. Godse was convicted of murder, and was hanged in Ambala jail in November 1949. His family was part of the Chitpavan Brahmin community and Godse was educated at the local school in Baramati and later worked for 10th Maratha Regiment of the British Army during World War II. His political affiliations included the Hindu Mahasabha as well as other organizations serving to protect Hindu rights during India’s independence period. Godse made news worldwide after he was found guilty of assassinating one of India’s most iconic political leaders, Gandhi. Despite his infamy, Godse would remain a figure of controversy for decades to come and his legacy continues to be largely debated and dissected. May he rest in peace.
