Mother Teresa, one of the most beloved figures in modern history, passed away on September 5, 1997 aged 87. Born in Skopje, Macedonia on 26th August 1910, she dedicated her life to service of the world's most poor and needy. In 1948 she received a calling from God to serve the poorest of the poor, leading eventually to the creation of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. Her tireless work on behalf of the world's poorest earned her countless international honours, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, the Magsaysay Award and the Balzan Prize. Her dedication was recognized globally, leading to visits with Popes Paul VI and John Paul II and heads of state around the world. Mother Teresa will be remembered as a symbol of compassion and as a tireless advocate for the rights of the disadvantaged, the disabled and the dying. She is survived by her Missionaries of Charity, which to this day continues to provide assistance to 'the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone'. Her passing is of great sadness to all who admired her devotion and selflessness and she will be greatly missed.

I could just remember how my father used to say that the reason for living was to get ready to stay dead a long time. William Faulkner
