Born into a wealthy family in Omaha, Nebraska in 1920, Montgomery developed a passion for theater at an early age, and initially pursued a career in law. After enrolling in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, however, he chose to focus on acting and made his Broadway debut in 1932.
