Moe Berg, age 70, died on May 30, 1972. He was an American Major League Baseball player, and an accomplished spy. Berg grew up in Newark, New Jersey and studied at Princeton University and Columbia Law School. Berg was a journeyman baseball player from 1923 to 1939, playing for numerous Major League Baseball teams. His career spanned 15 seasons and included an impressive .243 batting average and 249 stolen bases. From 1942 to 1945 he worked as a spy for the United States Office of Strategic Services. He carried out sensitive operations in occupied Europe and Japan during the war. After his career as a spy, Berg continued his work as a radio broadcaster for the Washington Senators. He also enjoyed travel and speaking several languages, including French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Japanese. An intellectual player, Berg was revered for his intellect and skill during his time in baseball. He left behind a legacy of espionage and knowledge still remembered to this day. Berg will be sadly missed.
