Milton S. Hershey, the founder of the famous Hershey Chocolate Company, passed away peacefully on October 13th, 1945, at the age of 88. Milton was born in Derry Church, Pennsylvania in 1857. He began his career in the confectionery business at the age of 15 in Lancaster and Philadelphia, learning the trade. After several failed attempts, and a series of successful experiments in 1893, Milton developed a recipe for a milk chocolate bar which has since become iconic. In 1903 he moved his company to Hershey, Pennsylvania, where he began to develop a model town. He opened schools, churches, parks, stores and other amenities for the people of Hershey, earning him the title of “chocolate king”. Additionally, Hershey gave back to the community by donating millions of dollars to charities and institutions, including the Milton Hershey School for underprivileged children. Milton spent his life devoted to making quality chocolate and giving back to the community of Hershey. He will be remembered for his generous spirit and love of chocolate.
