Maurice Joseph "Mickey" Rooney, Jr. passed away on April 6, 2014, at the age of 93. A five-time Academy Award-nominated actor, singer and vaudevillian, Rooney first stepped into the public eye in 1926 when he made his show business debut at the age of six months. He went on to have a variety of beloved roles in films such as Boys Town, The Family Honeymoon and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He also won the Emmy for best actor in 1982 for his performance in Bill. Born on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, Rooney started his career in show business by playing in his parents' Vaudeville act when he was just 16 months old. His role in MGM’s 1945 hit movie National Velvet as well as The Hardy family of films in the late 1930s made him a Hollywood icon. Among his many honors, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1983, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Throughout his nearly eight decades in show business, Rooney remained a beloved star.He is survived by his eight children and his fourth wife Jan Chamberlin Rooney.
