Michel Foucault, the renowned French philosopher and historian, passed away on June 26, 1984, aged 57. His death is a great loss to the world of academia and the arts. Foucault was born in Poitiers, France in 1926 and is best known for his influential works in philosophy, history and social studies, most notably Archaeology of Knowledge, Discipline and Punish, and The History of Sexuality. His ideas and theories on power, discourse, language and the body has greatly influenced the humanities and is considered one of the most influential thinkers of modern times. At the time of his death, he was professor of philosophy at the College of France, and his works have impacted generations of scholars from diverse disciplines. He will be remembered and honored for his work on the history and structure of knowledge, his commitment to social justice, and the sheer scope and energy of his intellectual creativity.
