Michael Collins, a renowned figure in the history of space exploration and the director of the Apollo 11 mission, passed away on April 28th, 2021 at the age of 90. An Irish-American astronaut and test pilot, Collins served in the U.S. Air Force before becoming a NASA astronaut. In addition to his heroic actions on the Apollo 11 mission, Collins also flew on the Gemini 10 mission and the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project. Following his NASA career, Collins served as the director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Throughout his career, Collins was known for his intelligence, dedication, and humility. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1980. He is survived by his three children, Katherine, Michael and Ann, and four grandchildren.
