On November 5, 1990, Meir Kahane, an American-born Orthodox Jewish rabbi, writer, and activist, passed away at the age of 58. Kahane was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932. He attended the Mir Yeshiva and studied at Brooklyn College and the New York University School of Law. In 1968, he became a rabbi. Kahane was the founder of the Jewish Defense League, a paramilitary organisation in the United States, and Kach, an ultra-nationalist movement in Israel. He also wrote numerous books, articles, and political manifestos. Kahane was an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and the Palestine Liberation Organisation, two parties that he believed to be in conflict with the rights and interests of the Jewish people. Kahane was a controversial figure. He was a strong advocate of a 'Greater Israel', and of the removal of non-Jewish citizens from Israel. He died in the middle of a speech in New York City. At the time of his death, Kahane had become a powerful political and religious voice in the Jewish world. He will be remembered for his passionate advocacy and writings about the rights of his people.
