It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Meena Kumari passed away on March 31, 1972 at the age of 38. Also known as Mahjabin, she was an Indian film actress, singer and poet. Meena Kumari was born in Uttar Pradesh into a family of poets, and had an early interest in singing, writing and acting. She made her film debut in a small role in the film 'Leatherface’ in 1939, and went on to become one of the most prolific actresses and singers in the Hindi film industry, with a career spanning over 30 years and over ninety films. Her acting career was marked by significant milestones in t Indian film, from drama to comedy to tragedy, which earned her the titles of ‘The Tragedy Queen’ and ‘The Girl with the Tragic Eyes’. She was the recipient of many accolades, including two National Film Awards, one Filmfare Award, and six BFJA awards for her great performance in films like Pakeezah, Baiju Bawra and Shaheed. Meena Kumari was also a successful singer and poet, with published collections of her poetry under the pen name ‘Naaz’. Her hit songs include ‘Pyar Kiya To’ and ‘Chalte Chalte Mere Yeh Geet’, which remain popular today. Meena Kumari will be remembered as an versatile actress and a celebrated singer and poet. She is survived by her daughter Tanvi Azmi and her siblings.
