Medgar Evers, activist and leader in the civil rights movement, died on June 12, 1963 at the age of 37. Originally from Decatur, Mississippi, Evers served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning home from the war, he attended Alcorn College and graduated with a degree in business in 1952. Evers was an active and prominent activist in the civil rights movement, serving as the Field Secretary for the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP and co-founding the Regional Council of Negro Leadership. He organized several boycotts, led a voter education program, and helped to integrate University of Mississippi. Evers was tragically assassinated outside of his home in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963. His legacy lives on in the NAACP Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York in his honor. He will be remembered for his unwavering spirit and commitment to securing equal rights for all.
