Mary Welsh Hemingway (1908-1986), the acclaimed writer, passed away on November 26, 1986, at the age of 78. She was born in Walker, Minnesota, and moved to Chicago following her graduation from the University of Minnesota in 1929. There in Chicago, she met Ernest Hemingway, to whom she was married from 1940 until his death in 1961. Mary is best remembered for being part of a circle of esteemed writers, and for her own literary works, which include her memoir of life with Ernest, How it Was (1976), as well as How it Was: An Inside View of the Final Years of Ernest Hemingway (1979). During the course of her life she held various editorial positions, including managing editor at Look Magazine and editor of the magazine’s book division. She is survived by her two sons, Jack and Patrick, as well as a granddaughter, Lorian Hemingway. Mary will be remembered fondly for her vibrant spirit and her distinguished contribution to literature.
