Mary Travers passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the age of 72. Born on April 9, 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky, Mary was the daughter of Edward and Millie Travers. She was an acclaimed singer-songwriter best known for her work as one-third of the folk musical supergroup Peter, Paul, and Mary. Mary had a great passion for her craft and traveled all over the world with her colleagues Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. With their legendary hits such as "If I Had a Hammer," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and "Puff the Magic Dragon," Mary met with tremendous success throughout her career. Throughout her life, Mary remained an advocate and champion of the Civil Rights movement, anti-war efforts, human rights, environmental protection, and humanitarian causes. She was devoted to her art and her activism, fighting relentlessly for the things she believed in and tirelessly encouraging others to take up the cause. She is survived by her daughter Erika from her relationship with the actor William Christopher and her three grandchildren Tristan, Hunter, and Liam. Mary Travers will be dearly missed and remembered for her beautiful music, timeless activism, and infectious spirit.
