Mary Soames, Baroness Soames, LG, DBE, passed away on 2014-05-31 at the age of 91. Born Mary Churchill on September 15, 1922, in London, England, to parents Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Clementine Hozier, Mary was the youngest of the five Churchill children. She was educated at Woldingham School, Surrey, and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. During World War II, Mary served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and the Women’s Royal Navy Service before joining the UK Foreign Office. After taking a break in 1952 to marry Christopher Soames, they returned to Europe for a time, before being stationed in Washington, DC in 1954 as the British Ambassador’s Executive Assistant. Upon her return to the UK, Lady Soames made a name for herself in public service. She was heavily involved in the UK’s war relief efforts in the 1970s and 80s, was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1972, and supplied the very first female presence on the government Pension Commission in 1980. In 2005 Soames was made a Companion of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of knighthood in the country, and became the second woman actor-prince to receive the title in the organization’s five hundred year history. Until her passing, Lady Soames remained active in her charities, public service, and as a biographer for her father. She is survived by her five children, as well as fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
