Princess Mary, the Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, died on 28 March 1965 at the grand old age of 67. She was the only daughter of King George V of the United Kingdom and was born on 25 April 1897. She married Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood, in 1922 and was an active member of the royal family. During her reign, she served as colonel-in-chief of the Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons, a longtime patron of the British Red Cross, and founded the Princess Mary's Nursing Service. She was also Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds from 1943-57. Princess Mary will be remembered for her generosity, wit and fine taste in artwork, writing and poetry. She dedicated a large portion of her time to both royal and charitable duties, always with her characteristic humour and grace. She is survived by her husband, six children; George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood; Gerald Lascelles; The Lady Mary Savile; the Lady Pamela Hicks; the Lord Rupert Nevill; and the Lady Marion Stein, twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her legacy of public service and philanthropy will live on.
