On May 26, 1976, the world lost an important figure in the history of philosophy, the great Martin Heidegger. He was born in 1889 in Messkirch, Germany, and lived for 86 years. Heidegger's contribution to philosophy was enormous, and his influence was prolific. He is best known for his seminal work, Being and Time, which profoundly shaped both existential philosophy and contemporary thought. He also taught at many of Europe's most prestigious universities, including Marburg University and Freiburg University, and his lectures there transformed the fields of philosophy, hermeneutics, and phenomenology. He contributed widely to our understanding of the nature of existence, being, language, time, history, and culture. His influence was broad, truly international, and timeless. Heidegger's legacy is set to live on in philosophical conversations for generations to come.
