Marion Barry - a public servant who strongly advocated for civil rights and held numerous significant roles in local and national politics - passed away on November 23, 2014, at the age 78. His life of civil service began in college when he joined the NAACP in Tennessee. After graduating, he moved to Washington D.C. to work in grassroots organization and eventually co-founded a local chapter of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. His leadership on civil rights and justice put him in the spotlight and he was soon elected to the first of four terms as mayor of Washington D.C. During this time, Barry's focus on economic development, neighborhood improvements, and education reform helped reshape the city. In addition to his work as mayor, Barry also served on the DC City Council from 1975-1979, and the DC Board of Education, 1979 to 1984. Barry's career extended beyond district level politics; he served three terms as a congressional delegate to the House of Representatives. In addition, he also served on the Executive Committee of the Congressional Black Caucus and the House Appropriations Committee. Barry was a strong advocate of civil and economic rights. Marion Barry was an iconic figure in Washington D.C. His life will be remembered for his many years of advocating for, and improving, the city.
