Mario Cuomo, beloved former governor of New York, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2015 at the age of 82. He will be remembered for his political accomplishments and serving the citizens of New York with dedication and commitment. Born on June 15, 1932, Mario Cuomo moved from Queens to South Jamaica in 1940 and attended St. John’s University where he graduated with honors. After earning a law degree, he reenlisted in the Navy and served from 1956 to 1957. He started his legal career in 1958, was appointed as assistant district attorney in 1960, continued on to run for and won two terms of lieutenant governor from 1979 to 1982, and was elected as governor in 1983, serving for three terms from 1983 to 1994. Throughout his political career he was an advocate for the disadvantaged in society — women, minorities, the poor — and a national spokesman for the values of compassion and moderation. Even when making tough budget decisions he was thoughtful and decisive. Among his many achievements is the creation of the Empire Zone program, the management of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and successful actions to protect New York’s environment. He left a lasting legacy as a statesman, a visionary, and a true public servant. He will be deeply missed.
