Margaret Sanger, who is widely known for her lifetime commitment to promoting human rights and the access to contraceptives, has passed away at the age of 86 on September 6, 1966. Born in Corning, New York in 1879, her interest in nursing led her to studying midwifery and gynecology in Europe, which allowed her to become an activist to defend the rights of women on reproductive health. She established the Birth Control Review in 1917 as a form of promotion of new knowledge related to family planning, and the American Birth Control League in 1921, later renamed Planned Parenthood, in order to advocate for free access to family planning and safe birthing. Her pioneering work as a health activist, educator, and sexual liberation advocator significantly shaped the way the world understands reproductive health today. She was a crucial force in birth control and her legacy remains in our society to this day. Margaret Sanger will be fondly remembered and her impact will be exactly as it was intended- immeasurable.
