Margaret Hamilton, a renowned computer scientist and software engineer, passed away on 16 May 1985 at the age of 82. Born in Indiana, she studied mathematics at university, going on to develop computer software while working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her most notable contributions were in the field of human-machine interaction. In the 1960s she led the team developing the onboard flight software for the Apollo space mission. This work ultimately ensured a safe return for the crew of Apollo 11, for which she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Throughout her career, Margaret was a champion of teaching programming to young people. With her contributions, she changed the way computers were perceived and provided computing a foundation to advance even further. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of computer scientists and engineers.
