Marcel Marceau, the world-renowned French mime artist, passed away on September 22, 2007 at the age of 84. He was born Marcel Mangel in Strasbourg, France on March 22, 1923, son of Charles Mangel and Anne Werzberg Mangel. Having first trained to be a butcher, he later trained as a mime with Etienne Decroux and Jaques Lecoq. A survivor of World War II after being sent to a concentration camp, he later changed his name from Mangel to the more stage-friendly Marceau. Marcel Marceau was best known for his play Bip, which he debuted in 1947 and still popular to this day. In addition, he created more than 90 characters, including The Inventor, The Professor, The Poet, and Argus,making him vastly influential in the world of mime theatre. His legacy is found in mimes all over the world, thanking him for his contributions and inspiration to the craft. He was also the president of the Ecoles International de Mimodrame de Paris and received multiple awards for his performances, including a knighthood from France. Marcel Marceau is remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and generations of admirers.
