Manute Bol, a Basketball Hall of Famer, passed away on June 19, 2010, at the age of 47. Manute was born in what is now South Sudan, and raised in Khartoum in neighboring Sudan. He became a civil war refugee when he moved to the United States in 1985. In the US, Bol played college basketball for the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and later went on to play center for the NBA's Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat. He is widely remembered for his incredible height of 7'7", making him one of the tallest players in NBA history. Throughout his career, Bol was dedicated to helping his home nation, and was an ambassador for a number of Sudanese relief and human rights organizations. He was an outspoken advocate for peace in the Sudanese civil war, and used the influence of his NBA career to bring media attention to the situation. Bol is survived by his wife, Atong, and his seven children.

Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life.
