Manilal Mohandas Gandhi, born in India on May 29, 1892, passed away peacefully on April 4, 1956 at the age of 63. Manilal was the son of Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi and Kasturbai Gandhi. He had an older brother, Harilal, and two younger sisters, Ramdas and Devdas. Manilal received his early education in India and studied science at the University of Bombay in 1907. In 1910, Manilal joined his father in South Africa, where he worked with him as his political secretary and helped to lead the passive resistance to segregation. In 1913, Manilal passed the Pleader's examination and practiced as a lawyer in Johannesburg, often defending Indians charged with disobeying segregation laws. In 1917, Manilal married Sushila Mashruwala, with whom he had four children – two sons and two daughters. Manilal developed strong bonds with the members of the Indian community, helping to found five branches of the Indian Congress in South Africa. He also edited the electronic newspaper, Indian Opinion during the same period. Manilal returned to India in 1918 and continued his work in Indian politics, opposing the British colonial rule and agreeing with his father's political philosophy. Manilal spent the remaining years of his life in India and was considered a hero by many in the country. He is survived by his wife, four children, and various extended family members. Manilal will be remembered fondly for his commitment to Indian independence and for his generous spirit. Funeral arrangements are pending.
