Madeleine Talmage Force Astor (née Force) passed away at the age of 46 on March 27th, 1940 in Beacon, NY. Born on June 19th, 1893 to a banking family in New York City, Madeleine was educated in the best schools and was recognized as a debutante of high society in 1910 when she was seventeen. That same year, Madeleine married John Jacob Astor IV and together they had one son, John Jacob IV (Jack). In 1912, Madeleine joined her husband on the famously ill-fated RMS Titanic for what was to be the trip of a lifetime. Unfortunately, the planned honeymoon was cut short as the ship famously sunk and despite escaping by lifeboat, her husband perished at sea. Following the tragedy, Madeleine focused on raising her son to the best of her ability, eventually remarrying Colonel John Henry Freiberg of Harriman, New York in 1916. Madeleine is remembered for her bravery and unwavering commitment to her family. Her son Jack went on to become an aviator and was inducted posthumously into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 1990. Madeleine was laid to rest in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York. She is survived by her son Jack, her brother James, and numerous nieces and nephews.
