Madeleine Albright, an extraordinary leader on the world stage and the first female Secretary of State of the United States, died on Sunday March 23, 2022 at the age of 84. Mrs. Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and emigrated to the United States with her family at age 11. She earned degrees from Wellesley College and Columbia University, before embarking on her distinguished career in public service. Mrs. Albright began her career as an advisor to the National Security Council, and in 1993 President Bill Clinton named her the first woman to serve as US Ambassador to the United Nations. In 1996, she was sworn in as Secretary of State, making her the first female Secretary of State in US history. During her tenure she promoted democracy throughout Central and Eastern Europe, stood for human rights and women’s rights around the world, fought against terrorism, and helped to promote global stability. Mrs. Albright was later named the foremost diplomat of the 20th Century by The New York Times, and was given numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Mrs. Albright was a leader of both strength and integrity and will be remembered for her dedication to the United States and her tireless efforts for peace and progress world-wide. She is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, and a large, extended family. She will be remembered fondly and deeply missed.
