On November 12, 1946, Madan Mohan Malaviya passed away at the age of 84. Malaviya was an Indian educationist and politician who was notable for his efforts in the independence movement. Malaviya was born to a Brahmin family in Allahabad, today's Uttar Pradesh, in 1861. He attended local schools before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Allahabad PF University in 1884. Malaviya later went on to receive a Master of Arts degree in 1904 with honors in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Persian. A fiercely independent spirit, Malaviya was a major proponent of the independence movement in India. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1886 and organized strong campaigns against the British and their policies in India. Malaviya was also a supporter of the Swadeshi Movement, which called for economic self-reliance and the boycotting of foreign-made goods. Malaviya was also a renowned educationist. He was a co-founder of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1916 and served as its first Vice-Chancellor. Malaviya's tireless efforts in improving Indian education led to him becoming known as the 'Maker of Modern Benaras'. Malaviya's legacy lives on through his pioneering work in the independence movement and in education. He will be remembered for his courage and conviction, for inspiring generations of Indians to fight for their liberty, and for enabling the pursuit of knowledge.
