Maurits Cornelis Escher, known to the world as M. C. Escher, passed away on March 27th, 1972 at the age of 73. A Dutch graphic artist, architectural designer, and illustrator, Escher was arguably one of the most iconic and well-known artists of the 20th century. Best known for his intricate, tessellated drawings, Escher was highly regarded for his mathematical analogies and exceptional use of perspective to create his visually-stimulating works of art. His most famous pieces include Relativity, Drawing Hands, and Sky and Water I. Escher was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands on June 17, 1898 and studied architecture, graphic designing, and a variety of other media including woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotint, at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. His work can be found in art galleries and in the homes of art aficionados despite how long ago his death was. Simply put, the works of Escher have an elusive quality and his addition to the world of art will continue to be treasured for many years to come.
