The world was left with a heavy heart on December 13, 1944, when beloved actress and dancer, Lupe Vélez, suddenly passed away at the age of 36. Lupe was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico in 1908. She began her career as a stage actress in Mexico before her professional debut in the 1925 silent film, What Price Glory?. After moving to Hollywood in 1929, Lupe was quickly cast in a number of thematic films that showcased her exuberant talent. Lupe quickly captivated audiences with her beauty, charm, and sincere interpretation of her characters. During her career, she appeared in 48 films, including Mad Love (1935), The Girl From Mexico (1939), and — her most notable performance — in The Crimson Pirate (1952). Her unparalleled talent made her an integral part of the 1930s silver screen, as well as a beloved figure in the Latinx Hollywood community. Lupe leaves behind a strong 1927 legacy — one that honors her courageous audacity and desire to challenge existing norms in a cinematic world dominated by men. We won't forget her vibrant, albeit short, life, her unrestrained spirit, and contagious laughter. Rest in peace, Lupe Vélez.
