Luc Montagnier, renownedFrench virologist and Nobel Laureate, passed away on February 8, 2022 at the age of 89. He had a long and distinguished career in science throughout his life. Montagnier was born on August 18, 1932 in Chabanais, France. He received his medical degree in 1960 and completed his PhD in virology in 1971. Montagnier is best known for his discovery in 1983 of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that can cause AIDS. This discovery was recognized by the Nobel Foundation in 2008, when Montagnier was granted the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with Harald zur Hausen and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi. Throughout his life, Montagnier held numerous prestigious scientific positions and received numerous honors. He was a professor at Institut Pasteur, the Director of the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention, a member of the French Academy of Science, and president of the World Council of the Care for AIDS. He was an inspiration to many in the fields of biomedicine and virology and will be remembered for his contribution to science.
